Early Snow Fall

A foot of snow in December is pretty rare in our part of Virginia, and it's not even officially winter yet.
Last year we got our first snowstorm in March, our only snow fall.
Nice warm coats on the yaks.

Uninvited Dinner Guest

A couple of months ago we discovered that something was trying to get into the plastic container on our porch, the container that holds our cats' food. I heard some banging and noises during the middle of the night and discovered this critter. From then on we didn't leave cat food out at night, trying to make sure this little guy looked for food somewhere else. Then one day someone left a bag of cat food out on the porch, not in the sealed container. We were very surprised and concerned to see our guest back during the day. Turns out she was a new mom and looked like she was starving. Maybe we shouldn't have, but she looked healthy other than hungry, she didn't bother our cats who were unfazed by her appearance, so we made sure she had a dinner every night. We haven't seen her in awhile. Seems she and her family have moved on.

Munching Mantis

We had some pumpkin plants come up on their own in this summer's garden, in between our squash plants. Not the right time of the summer for pumpkins to be growing, but we left them there to see how well they would grow. A week or so ago we picked the pumpkins and brought them up to the porch. In the morning we found this praying mantis enjoying his breakfast on our newly harvested pumpkin.

Boy in the Water

Last night I was out filling the water buckets for the yaks and Boy came up. He waited patiently for the big blue bucket to fill, clean cold well water, worth waiting for. Slurped a little from the top, and then he dunked his nose in, all the way up to his eyes, while blowing the water out of his nose. Wish I had a video of that.Pin It Now!

Keeping Cool

Summer is here. It's been in the low 90's, not too hot, yet. The yaks have been staying in the shade more. Occasionally one will take extra measures to keep cool. Seems that Button decided that their drinking water might serve another purpose. Maybe we need to get a plastic kiddie pool and watch what happens.

Yaks in the Snow

Button in the snow.

This little bull was born 6 months ago. First big snow fall for him.

Usually Boy looks so white, but not against the snow.

It has been a few years since we have seen more than a dusting. Some of our yaks have never experienced a foot of snow.

Yak vs Machine

Usually the yaks ignore any farm equipment Kenny might be using nearby, unless it's the tractor bringing them a bale of hay. Then they might show some excitement. So it was pretty amusing to see Dakota's reaction to the new zero turn lawnmower Kenny drove through the field. Jessica happened to record the event, howbeit a little shaky, since it seems holding a camera still is not possible while laughing.
